The clock reads 2:04 a.m., and the ground beneath me seems unexpectedly chilled. A blanket is draped over my shoulders—not because the room is freezing, but to buffer against that specific, bone-deep stillness of the night. I feel a tension in my neck and adjust it, hearing a faint pop, and then instantly start an internal debate about whether that movement was a "failure" of awareness. I find the mental judgment far more taxing than the actual stiffness.
The looping Echo of "Simple" Instructions
I am haunted by the echoes of Satipatthana lectures, their structure playing on a loop. Observe this. Know that. Be clear. Be continuous. Simple words that somehow feel complicated the moment I try to apply them without a teacher sitting three meters away. In this isolation, the clarity of the teaching dissolves into a hazy echo, and my uncertainty takes over.
I attempt to watch the breath, but it feels constricted and jagged, as if resisting my attention. A tightness arises in my ribs; I note it, then instantly wonder if I was just being mechanical or if I missed the "direct" experience. That spiral is familiar. It shows up a lot when I remember how precise Chanmyay explanations are supposed to be. Precision turns into pressure when no one’s there to correct you.
Knowledge Evaporates When the Body Speaks
I feel a lingering, dull pain in my left leg; I make an effort to observe it without flinching. The mind keeps drifting off to phrases I’ve read before, things about direct knowing, bare awareness, not adding stories. I find the situation absurd enough to laugh, then catch myself and try to note the "vibration" of the laughter. Sound. Vibration. Pleasant? Neutral? Who knows. It disappears before I decide.
A few hours ago, I was reading about the Dhamma and felt convinced that I understood the path. Now that I am actually sitting, my "knowledge" is useless. The body's pain is louder than the books. My aching joints drown out the scriptures. I crave proof that this discomfort is "progress," but I am left with only the ache.
The Heavy Refusal to Comfort
I catch my shoulders tensing toward my ears; I release them, only for the tension to return moments later. The breath is uneven, and I find myself becoming frustrated. I observe the frustration, then observe the observer. Eventually, the act of "recognizing" feels like an exhausting chore. This is the "heavy" side of the method: it doesn't give you a hug; it just gives you a job. There is no "it's okay" in this tradition. There is only the instruction to see what is true, over and over.
I hear the high-pitched drone of an insect. I hold my position, testing my resolve, then eventually I swat at here it. Annoyance. Relief. A flash of guilt. All of it comes and goes fast. I don’t keep up. I never keep up. I recognize my own lack of speed, a thought that arrives without any emotional weight.
Experience Isn't Neat
The diagrams make the practice look organized: body, feelings, mind, and dhammas. Actual reality, however, is messy and refuses to stay in its boxes. Sensation bleeds into emotion. Thought hides inside bodily tension. I sit here trying not to organize it, trying not to narrate, and still narrating anyway. My mind is stubborn like that.
I glance at the clock even though I promised myself I wouldn’t. 2:12. Time is indifferent to my struggle. The sensation in my leg changes its character. I find the change in pain frustrating; I wanted a solid, static object to "study" with my mind. Instead, it remains fluid, entirely unconcerned with my spiritual labels.
The technical thoughts eventually subside, driven out by the sheer intensity of the somatic data. I am left with only raw input: the heat of my skin, the pressure of the floor, the air at my nostrils. I wander off into thought, return to the breath, and wander again. No grand conclusion is reached.
I don't have a better "theory" of meditation than when I started. I am simply present in the gap between the words of the teachers and the reality of my breath. I am sitting in the middle of this imperfect, unfinished experience, letting it be exactly as it is, because reality doesn't need my approval to be real.
